New Workshop! Lighting 3 | Advanced Off Camera Flash

Show Critique
This is just an image I had on hand of my sister and niece. I'm still a beginner so any critique is very much appreciated.

Nice candid of your sister and niece. I love the expression on the little girl’s face. In my opinion there are a couple of adjustments I would make. First, the lighting seems a bit strong, especially on your sister’s arm and on your niece. Could you adjust the exposure in post? Secondly, I’d crop this portrait much tighter to your subjects. Your sister’s arm/shoulder in the foreground could be cropped substantially. Since the story is the kiss on the baby’s cheek, in my opinion much of the negative space is unneeded. Thank you for sharing.

Love the expression and overall moment captured, and the chosen aperture is perfect for both background blur and keeping the faces in focus. Compositionally, I think this would be stronger in a square or vertical format, not cutting off at the elbow. Love the colours here.

Thank you. She actually asked me to crop her arm because she thought it looked heavy. I’m sure I could have found a better place to crop though… or posed her differently. Thanks again for the feedback!

I do like that – brings the focus to the expressions even more. Good call.
