Hi Rich! Thanks for sharing this great image. I like the overall mood, I think it’s a very great blend of understated yet dramatic lighting, scenery, and pose. It’s tricky to expose and process shots like this, but I think you did a great job on both…

I must admit that I feel like the very blurry foreground elements are just a touch distracting. I don’t know what your exposure triangle could have been, but I’d probably have preferred this shot to have a smaller aperture, or more depth of field, to stop these things from just being distracting blobs, and start being an understandable element of the composition. Your ISO isn’t listed for this shot, but if it was anything low, I would have tried bumping it up 2-4 stops, so that the aperture could hit f/4-8. That way the foreground and background would still be a little blurred, but just less so that the scene could come together.

I also wish that his head weren’t disappearing behind her as much as it is. I like the pose, but I wish I could see just a little bit more of his nose and cheek and jawline.

Same recommendation for her chin. I wish that she had turned her head just a little bit so that some more of her chin were visible…

Thanks for the Critique Matthew, really appreciate that and you’ve obviously got a great eye for detail.

Apologies I thought I put up the ISO, it was 100 so I could have easily got away with bumping it up.

I have a tendency to shoot pretty much everything wide open, but stopping down for this scene would have made more sense.

Posing was tough, it was very dark (nailing focus was my main concern) and it was getting cold, but you’re completely right, small tweaks would have made this far better.

Appreciate you taking time to comment!
