    I think you did beautifully here, the natural light is nice! I would process the shadows to be just a touch darker, though, I don’t think they need to  be nearly this well-preserved; all that matters is seeing detail in the kid’s face, NOT in the shadowy parts of the log beneath him. Also, I think it would better capture the story / emotion if it were framed just a little bit tighter, although you’d lose the sky if you did this by cropping, so if possible I would have preferred to see the image captured from a slightly lower andgle and zoomed / moved in a bit. Looks like that might not have been an option, though, with the sand in the foreground getting pretty close in the lower right of the frame.
