Why the client didn’t like the pose? I think in terms of pose you could ask him to stretch his back a bit more, look a bit slouch. Also bring his head forward, to elongate neck and define more the jaw.

I think it was awkward for him. I directed him into that position and asked him to bring his forehead toward me a little more  but he said it felt to “posed”. When he looked at it his comment was that it looked to “Joe Cool”.

Well I try to avoid this usually explaining that posing is awkward as the camera see in 2D not 3D like human eye :) so to be a natural pose in the picture as to be sometimes unnatural before. Maybe is also that he feels not at ease when he looks himself in picture, and reassuring is also a good thing while giving the picture or showing them. Hope it helps :)

If the customer said they weren’t happy with the pose I am not quite sure what they meant. Might be good to ask them to clarify. Pose looks fine. Interesting twist on a traditional headshot crop. If anything (unless you are making a point of the background) I’d like to see more shallow depth of field and see a less distracting background. Without a separation light I think that background is too distracting and flat.
