Fantastic shot, Jerri! Nicely done all around, although yeah it’s hard to get both pets and kids to look at the camera all at once. Honestly, I often wind up just compositing shots sometimes, which helps if you’re shooting from a tripod.

As a general rule, I try not to allow horizon lines to intersect people’s heads right near the top, it allows the background to compete for attention just a little bit more. So for this shot I would have either gotten just a bit higher or a bit lower. Sometimes only a few inches can make all the difference.

If you know you are shooting with a dog, take a squeaky toy…it may just be enough to get the dog to look or it will run towards you!! Dave

The dog was a surprise add, but that’s a great idea…I’ll be sure to have something handy in case it happens again. :-)

I like the colour cohesiveness you have achieved with their clothing! Something I guess you talked to them about. Good job! Personally I think it generally looks better when there are more ‘plan patterns’ like the ladies top compared to more ‘busy’ stripes and checks……Dave

Yes, the colors in the photo really come together quite nicely!

Thanks, Dave and Matt! I do talk to my clients about choosing neutral colors, avoiding loud patterns, etc…sometimes they thankfully listen, like in this case. :-)
