How can I improve? I realized afterwards I probably should have shot wider to include all finger tips. Is it a deal breaker or does... (show more)

    Hi Biran,

Yes, the fingertips being cropped are a bit distracting and unnerving; it’s tough photographing kids sometimes and framing the shot perfectly; so shooting just a little “loose” and then cropping later is always a great idea. It helps to have a lot of megapixels and a very fast aperture, such as 30-40 megapixels and f/1.4-1.8, so that you can still print a huge print even after you’ve cropped quite a bit. However, even with a 7D and a 24-70mm f/2.8, cropping in just a little bit is still totally possible, so don’t worry!

Overall, I’m loving the good quality of light, it seems soft on most of her face aside from the harder shadow under her chin. Not sure if this was direct flash, or a bounce, or a softbox, or what, but it’s nicely done! Great catchlight in her eyes, too.  Skin tones and overall processing look good. Just work on framing the shots perfectly, and timing the moments for great expressions!
