Several days ago, we released the first part of our exclusive Joel Grimes video interview, where Joel talks about how he started in photography and what shaped his philosophy of the business and the art of photography.
In this second part of the video interview, Joel talks more in depth about lighting, especially his signature 3-lights edgy lighting style. For Joel, lighting is really simple – it’s all about the size of the modifier and the position of the light. The bigger the source in relation to the subject, the softer the light. And if you have just one light, master it first instead of going into a lot of debt trying to buy three or four more lights.
Joel also explains his HDR process and how to make it look more realistic and not over-processed.
Finally, Joel talks about his shooting style now and the direction he is heading as he continues to evolve in his craft.
Joel is both an amazing photographer and educator with a lot of passion in creating images and sharing his knowledge. He currently has a free 16-week-long series on the Framed Network called Lit Up, as well as his own set of video tutorials and upcoming workshops in Pasadena, CA and Kingston, NY.
