It is standard practice for an artist to want to push boundaries and see if the sky is indeed the limit while indulging in every tool in the chest. And at a point during that transcendence usually comes about a sense of confidence with a realization that it isn’t always about more or even perfection. That pivotal moment of choosing refinement is when an artist can truly express themselves.
Christina Aguilera is no stranger to theatrics and has been a chameleon committing to her ever-changing style so it comes as a pleasant surprise to see the singer sans high glam makeup with red lipstick and lashes on the cover of Paper Magazine. This is perhaps the first time that fans have ever seen her as herself, freckles and all.

We have seen natural and bare skin looks before, but never quite like this. Photographer Zoey Grossman did an impeccable job of capturing the many facets of the pop icon while staying true to a minimal and authentic look from the onset to the retouch.
The retouching of recent work and this set in particular has set a new standard and shows us where retouching is heading which is sure to carry over and influence other genres. Subtlety is key, even with eye and lip makeup, and it’s all about the skin.
It takes an incredibly skilled retoucher to edit images so flawlessly and have the finished product look as though it hasn’t even been retouched. The commissioned work exudes refinement while embracing the voice of the photographer and the overall authenticity of the subject and image.
It goes to show that just because everything is possible doesn’t mean it needs to be exercised all at once. It is knowing when to hold back and hone in on the subtleties and focusing on who you are at the core when a body of work really begins to shine.
