Both B&H and Amazon recently dropped their Canon 50mm 1.2 lenses by $300 to $1,299. While still not cheap, this is an awesome lens and a highly recommended upgrade from the 50mm 1.4.
The four Canon shooters in our studio upgraded last year from the 1.4 primarily because we were tired of taking the 1.4 into the CPS repair shop for focus issues. Long story short, the 1.2 is a huge improvement in terms of durability and quality. Of course, the better overall sharpness and additional 1/2 stop of light doesn’t hurt as well.

Great review! I own a 50mm f1.8, and I’m really happy with it. It may feel toyish at first, but its performance is solid. I would like to try the f1.4, but not the f1.2 – for that kind of money, I could think of much better choices, like the 24-70 f2.8, or the 16-35 f2.8, or even a 100-400mm… Yeah, I guess the 50mm f/1.2 would be low in my list.
Agree, the 1.8 has quickly become a favorite lens.
i think your math is wrong – price is $1,299 which is down from $1,479
yeah… sorry Michael .. I got confused with the 85mm price drop, which is $300 … thanks for pointing that out .. corrected now.
