We have been hearing quite a bit about the Canon 5D Mark IV and the high megapixel versions that will be part of that release. It has always been said that the release could come in the early part of 2015, and now we seem to have some more clarification on that point.
According to a report coming out of Canon Rumors, the new 5D bodies will be announced in March, not at CP+ in February like many had been thinking. This could possibly point to an official announcement at WPPI, which has its Expo running from March 2-4. Generally WPPI is not a big event for gear announcements, but given the 5D’s strong portrait and wedding demographic, it could make a lot of sense to announce them there.
Personally, I would love to see the new 5D models announced at WPPI, I will be there. That said, it is also possible Canon does its own thing, and announces later in March, making a big deal about the multiple models.
It will be interesting to see how this all pans out. It really seems as if Canon is having a shift in how they are doing things. It has been said that the giant had grown too big and moved too slow. Well, now the giant is turning, and im curious to see what it is up to.
What are your thoughts on this? When do you think the new 5D models will be announced? Leave a comment below!

Really hoping for this announcement to start dropping the price on used 5D3 sales.
Holy S**t
I also plan on attending WPPI and was hoping there would be some sort of expo discount going on that weekend for the new bodies.
Darn! I expected that this would happen; I bought my 5D Mk III in December 2013. It happens in the computer industry where products have a short life cycle. When I was researching DSLR cameras, the 7D was what I thought my purchasing agent (wife) would approve, but then she asked me my opinion on a 5D Mk III package and I said “Yes!” (I found a similar package for $500 less).
I thought that the Canon A-1 would be the last SLR camera that I bought in 1980, but I still use that. In July 2013 I bought a used Canon F-1N; she asked “That’s the pro model?”; I said “Yes” and she said “Get it.” Now, I also own a 5D. In 2012, I talked her out of getting me a DSLR when I found her budget was a T3i; as consolation, I got a Canon FD 28mm f2.8 lens.
LOL, purchasing agent…. I know how you feel. I remember the first time my wife got a whiff of how much gear costs, she thought my lens (Tamron 17-50 2.8) was about £50 so I had a lot of explaining to do when she over heard me telling a friend it was £350. I am working up my courage to put in a request for Canon 70-200mm F4… any tips?
right on dude i also got an Canon A1 that I still use as well. I feel ya on the 5D. but thats still a great camera that youll be able to use for years ! I usually wont consider upgrading till 2 versions later. I do the same with my iphones since it seems like they also come out every year !
My only tip for getting wives to approve large gear expenses: shoot a couple jobs professionally, and charge enough to pay for your gear! Either that, or ask your boss for a raise and make more money lol.
@Matthew – I think no.1 will do the trick.
I’ve been meaning to write one particular article for a very long time- how to pay for any camera / lens you want by buying and selling other gear on Ebay…
Stay tuned!
It was my wife that found a Canon 5D Mk III package on Amazon for $4000; she asked “What do you think about this?” I said “Wow! (a full frame camera!). Let me check B&H.” I found a similar package for $500 less. The Amazon had a tripod, probably a cheapie, and I had bought a Manfrotto a year earlier. She knows I want a telephoto zoom; but that has to wait.
Ah.. the dreaded purchasing agent. It’s not fair to have to explain how you NEED a new lens to someone who can’t comprehend how that’s possible when you have so many already. I’m a coward, I just buy and hope she doesn’t notice. Or does that make me brave.. or stupid.. I’m not sure.
This should be interesting! Can’t wait to see what Canon will drop on the market.
Come on Canon don’t let us down !
This is a really important year for Canon. I know a lot of professionals that are ready to jump ship. They have taken it on the chin the past two years from companies like Sony and Nikon. Mirrorless is certainly the future, I have been telling everyone that the Mark IV will probably be my last DSLR. There is just too much forward momentum with mirrorless. The issues with slower focusing and camera features hidden too deep in the menu are easily fixable. Canon needs to take mirrorless technology more seriously or they will end up like Blackberry. With that being said, they need to improve the dynamic range in their DSLR line-up first and then address things like a higher sync speed. Real world applications are what’s important to those of us that do this for a living. Come on Canon! Prove the doubters wrong!
End up like Blackberry? How about, end up like Kodak? Check out the quotes I gleaned from Kodak’s rollercoaster history in this article here:
https://slrlounge.com/will-canon-nikon-lose-to-sony-sigma-cameratalk-matthew-saville/
“Japanese competitor Fujifilm entered the U.S. market with lower-priced film and supplies, but Kodak did not believe that American consumers would ever desert its brand.”
WHOOPS!!!
Poor Kodak .. sounds like Hassleblad’s infamous stance that digital cameras will never compete with the quality of film, and were not worth investing research in.. :P
Since this is one of Canon’s most important camera, do you expect they will take this opportunity and improve on dynamic range?
I don’t see much complaints/requests on the web regarding megapixels but I do see a lot of concern about DR.
If they don’t improve on DR, do you think they’ll take a hit from the community?
And what do you think someone with a Mark III would need to want to upgrade to a Mark IV?
Yes, if they fail to make significant improvements, not necessarily matching the other brands, but a marked improvement over their current DR, then they will get major flack from the community.
I’m hoping for an announcement at WPPI too cuz I will be there also!! :)
