Canon 50mm F/1.8 STM Leaks, Coming Soon?

By Anthony Thurston on May 7th 2015

We have been hearing rumors about Canon 50mm lens replacements for a while now, and if the latest rumors are true, it sounds like we could be seeing a 50mm F/1.8 STM coming soon!

According to the report over on Canon Rumors, the new Canon 50mm F/1.8 STM has leaked (see image above, and specs below), and will be getting announced ‘very soon.’ As you can see from the image, it looks to be very similar in style and design to the STM and IS primes that Canon has been producing lately. Also note what appears to be a fairly small focus ring; this will not be a welcome sight to anyone who has tried to manual focus on the current 50mm /1.8.

Canon 50mm F/1.8 STM Leaked Specs

*Machine Translated*

  • Lens arrangement 5-group, six (Construction: 6 elements in 5 groups)
  • Full-frame compatible
  • Digital optimized coating
  • STM/Stepping motor
  • Full-time manual focus
  • Length: 39.3mm
  • Weight: 160g (1.55″)
  • 49mm filter thread

If the above specs are correct, the new lens is both shorter and heavier than the current Canon 50mm F/1.8 II. You will also note its small 49mm filter thread (vs the 52mm of the current model).

Overall, based on the specs and the leaked image, it looks to be a significant upgrade in terms of build quality. I really would have liked to see a larger manual focus ring – but the lens already looks pretty cramped, so I understand why the ring is so small. It also has what looks to be a metal lens mount; Canon has been known to cheat and use plastic mounts in the past, so it’s nice to see a metal mount on this lens.

What do you think? Is this the Canon 50mm F/1.8 replacement of your dreams, or has Canon screwed it up? Leave a comment below!

Interesting to see that they reduced the filter size.

Its a minor thing but if the rumored specs are true its interesting that they chose to put 49mm filter size on it instead of the 52mm that canon 50mm F/1.8s have had for well, forever. Even the last versions of the manual focus FD 50mm f/1.8 took 52mm filters. Even more interesting since the recently released 24mm and 40mm pancake lenses have 52mm. (both of which I bought) I was looking forward to using the same filters (without step-up ring) on the new 50mm as well.

Great news. This low-featured little bugger will only be a replacement for the current nifty fifty. Front element design says it will be much more like the three Canon pancakes than the three non-L IS refresh lenses.

That means Canon is all but certainly going to stick with a three lens 50 prime strategy, and that the 50 f/nooneknows IS USM is coming to replace the 20 year old 50 f/1.4 USM. I’ve been waiting for that lens for years. Internal focusing, fast/modern/reliable USM, IS, sharp as the dickens and *NOT* the size of a pickle jar — when Canon offers that, they can take my money.

So get on with it Canon — put this lens out so that the one I reeeeeeally want moves up in line.

Reading the headline…”Canon 50mm F/1.8 STM Leaks…” I guess it is not weather sealed.
