Pre-orders have been available since the lens was announced back on November 11th, and now, we finally have a release date for the white unicorn, or as most of you may know it, the Canon 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6L IS II!
Canon 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6L IS II Shipping Dec 12th
According to the product listing over on B&H, the new Canon 100-400mm will begin shipping on Friday, December 12th. As always, pre-orders are first come, first served, so if you want to get one of these beauties, I suggest you get your order in ASAP.
In case you need a reminder, the new Canon 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6L IS II is the follow up to the super popular Canon 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6L IS. The lens comes at an interesting time for Canon, as this lens in particular has stiff competition from the likes of Tamron and Sigma, two lenses that have more range and perform very well.

With the arrival — at long last — of the White Unicorn, we can now begin the wonderful process of pining for *another* focal length to be updated. :-P There are plenty of Canon lenses overdue for a new version, and I’d say the ones most coveted by Canonites in the CR Forums would be:
* The 50 f/1.4 update, surely with IS and all the goodness they put into the recent 24/28/35 non-L updates.
* The 35 f/1.4L II
* The next 135 L lens, which folks are praying for f/1.8 and/or IS.
I, and much of Canon’s users, would pre-order the first one above immediately — sight unseen. We currently have a boatload of 50mm primes to choose from (something like eight of them!), each with significant limitations. I want a 50 prime that is 9 out of 10 at *everything* and isn’t the size of a 24-70 zoom. That lens is coming, and I will buy it.
As usual Adam, I find your comment insightful and accurate.
