Big Lens Mania, New Canon 800mm F5.6L IS II In the Works

By Anthony Thurston on September 4th 2013

The biggest of big DSLR lenses is soon to be getting an update, at least if you believe the latest rumor coming from Canon Rumors. According to the canon rumor website Canon is getting ready to announce  a new 800mm F5.6L IS II and the announcement could come at any time. According to the rumor the new lens is ready to go and just needs to be announced.

I suggest if you are interested in getting one of these new lenses once they are announced that you start saving now. The Nikon version of this lens is almost $18,000, and given recent trends Canon is likely to price their version a bit higher than the Nikon. If I had to guess I would say expect this lens to come in around $20,000. Now quick, go look for the loose change under your car seats, you’re gonna need it!

The current Canon 800mm F5.6L IS USM is available for the low low price of only $13,999, you can pick one of them up now directly from the Canon store.

I am curious, what sort of use would you need the 800mm for? The obvious answers are wildlife and possibly some sports, but is there anything else that I am not thinking of? What are your thoughts on a new 800mm F5.6? Let us know in a comment below.

I have the current Canon 800 and use it for wildlife. Even at 800, it is short for birds. Most of the time I have the 1.4 attached giving me a reach of 1120mm. I am looking forward to the update in hopes of a built in T/C. I am gambling by putting my 800 on Craigslist to be ready for early order of the new lens. I recently purchased the 200-400 w/TC and really appreciate the advantage of flipping a switch to go from 400 to 560. My gamble is the time without an 800 and possibly the value of used 800s going up when the update comes in $6000 more than the current lens. I was nervous putting it on CL as I use it daily and still not confident in a timely roll out of the updated 800. I waited two years on the 200-400.

Why does it Need IS if you are most likely going to have it mounted on a tripod(damn thing probably weighs a ton)? Maybe for monopod i guess?

At 800mm, I suspect neither a tripod nor the ground seem that stable.
