Behind The Scenes of The Walking Dead Season 4 Premiere [Spoilers]

By Anthony Thurston on October 13th 2013

Behind-the-scenes-of-The-Walking-DeadEveryone’s favorite Zombie Apocalypse series is back, the 4th Season of the ever popular “The Walking Dead” series kicked off tonight. If you are one who has not yet watched the premiere and don’t like spoilers go watch it and then come back.

In the behind the scenes video below you will see what went into producing and creating the opening episode which aired tonight. It is really interesting on many levels; from a fan perspective its just neat to see it all get done, and from a photography/video perspective its fun to try and glean some clues as to how they set up their lighting and set to create such authentic scenes.

Take a look at the video below, we can break down some of what I gleaned from the video after you finish.

I was actually really surprised by the simplicity of the store set which this video mostly centers around. As is mentioned in the video the ground level of the store seems pretty simple, not a ton of studio lighting is apparent – the majority of the lighting seems to be coming from normal indoor lighting and windows. They did use lights in the upper level to mimic what would have been sunlight coming through the roof as the walkers fell through. It is easy to think that because its professional show that tons of lights and special elements were used to achieve a look, but in reality it looked pretty simple from a lighting perspective.

Another nice tidbit that I picked up was the use of the storyboards. It was neat to see a full board actually on set and not some virtual shot list on a tablet or something. Planning is key for any production – or photoshoot – to be the best it can be. Take advice from the “pros” plan ahead and know what you are going to need.

Love this show. The scenes where they are out the compound are so tense. The scene with Rick walking through the forest with the girl I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see how it panned out. Ditto the store scene waiting for something to jump out of the darkness! Great show
