Adventure is Calling: The Quit Your Job Timelapse

By Joseph Cha on October 30th 2013

Every photographer has romanticized the thought of quitting their day job and traveling the world. That’s exactly what Shane Black and two of his friends did. Shane Black left his steady job of six years to spend two months traveling the USA and photographing his journey along the way.

Black says “It was a trip filled with endless hours cooped up in a van, exploring breathtaking landscapes, sharing stories and laughs, meeting some of the nicest people, making new friends, getting to meet old friends from around the country, and sharing our love of photography with others.”

Black’s photographic adventure has captured one of the most beautiful timelapse videos I have ever seen. If you’ve ever looked up at the starry sky and realized how small you are, that is exactly how you’ll feel when watching this video. The movements in the clouds and milky way are so enormous you feel as if you’ve seen everything and very little at the same time. Watch the Adventure is Calling timelapse and see for yourself.

For 2 months Shane and his friends traveled across 32 states, 13 national and state parks, and covered 13,000 miles in a Dodge Caravan. To create this amazing timelapse, this is the gear they used.

Shane says “It was an adventure that gave us many memories that we will all hold onto for many years to come. I think that everybody needs to take a trip and have their eyes opened to just how beautiful this world is and how much is really out there.”

I’m a photographer and cinematographer based in Southern California. When I don’t have a camera in my face I enjoy going to the movies and dissecting the story telling and visual aesthetics.

Unbelievably beautiful!! Words can’t describe. All are so incredible, but the scene of the reddish mountains where it appears the camera has incrementally moved, I assume this because the old trees directly in front of the camera are moving, even has a 3D effect. Blew me away!! Great work! It was well worth your 2 months spent on this project.
