Kuler started as a web-based community to pick and share your color profiles and inspiration. It is a Pantone guru’s dream with its blend of color schemes and ability to transfer directly to an Adobe application, such as Photoshop or Illustrator.
What is Different About the Kuler App
The new iOS app version allows you to capture a color using the color wheel or camera phone mode (which is my favorite feature). You can then use that single color to generate multi-color palettes with 6 standard rules at your disposal; including monochromatic and complementary.
Voilá – you now have a color scheme with all your RGB and Hex values at your fingertips. You can quickly create a theme without having to match colors to your images later – and all from your iPhone or iPad. As an app, it takes the desktop version to the next level.
Why Photographers Would Love It
For those of you who use an iPad to do quick edits for your client, Kuler can add that final touch to your presentation or allow you to customize themes with your client on the spot for announcements or print materials. You can also sync and share your color themes for integration with your work on Twitter or by email.
For someone who works with color everyday, collecting inspiration from my favorite coffee shop or art gallery is something I have been doing for a long time. Now I can use my phone and quickly transfer profiles directly to my workspace without matching colors after the fact. The new Kuler app is a phenomenal resource, and free is always a great price.
Don’t have an iOS system? That’s okay. Use the online version for now and download images from your Flickr account. You can always pray to the Adobe gods in hopes of an extension of the platform.
