Aaron Nace of Phlearn.com came up with a great behind-the-scenes look at a great pin-up shoot called Newfangled Pinup. The premise of this shoot is to show a modern twist to the vintage technology from the pinup era and show how a smartphone has essentially replaced and merged all of those technology.
It’s a great concept with great execution and post-production.
The Behind-the-Scenes Video
The behind-the-scenes video not only covers the lighting setup, but also the production, styling, props acquisition, and post-production considerations. When it comes to a highly-stylized shoot like this, attention to hair, wardrobe, makeup, and props are paramount to carrying out the look successfully, so be sure to pay attention to that segment of the video.
Additionally, because this is a series of like images, it is also important to make sure that the images have a similar look to each other. You can learn more about the post-production side from the PRO Pinup Cola tutorial.
Aaron had to accomplished two goals with his lighting: Make it interesting and allow a large range of motion for the models. As a result, he used four large, directional light sources that open up the shadows without making the overall image look too flat. To learn more, be sure to read Phlearn‘s article on the shoot at BTS: Newfangled Pinup.
