As smartphone cameras become more advanced every year, in what appears to be a straight out tech war between product developers, competitions catering to the cell phone photography crowd are starting to gain momentum. That is not to mention some pretty remarkable entries as well. One of these competitions is the iPhone Photography Awards (IPPA Awards). Like it or hate it, some of the images rival photos taken by more traditional means. It just goes to show, it is not all about the equipment, but the photographer.

Check out some of the winners and honorable mentions of the 7th Annual IPPA Awards | 2013.

Really amazed how much photography progressed via mobile devices. Great set which makes me now think the reason for keeping my DSLR.

Gorgeous work! In style, emotion and impact, these images surpass traditional photography. I also prefer working with a digital compact these days over my clunky old film Nikon.

Nice idea Tim – do you have any particular area of interest (apps/photographer inspiration/tech)?

Hi, Tim – My image is the one at the top of the page – the girl in the snowstorm.

My co-author and I just published a book (available now on Amazon) covering exactly that – workflows of 45 photographers and artists and how they accomplished their work. Several of the winners and honorees in the IPPA also appear in the book (as does a tutorial from me).
