In this video, we will demonstrate how to upgrade your hard drive and RAM in the Asus G75VW.  One of the major benefits of  the Asus “Republic of Gamers” line of machines is that they are very, very easy to upgrade.

The Video Tutorial

(By the way, the general procedure can actually be used as a guide to upgrade most of the Asus “Republic of Gamers” line of laptops; such as the G74 series and the G73 series, even if things are in a slightly different locations.)

The RAM

Unlike on a Mac, (cough cough!) Ram upgrades on a PC can be surprisingly easy. Some PC laptops (including a few Asus machines) do hide one or two of the RAM slots in an extremely tough location, however the G75VW’s RAM slots are both easy-access.  Remember to be gentle and angle-in with the RAM, don’t try and push it in 100% parallel.  You should be able to tell if the notch on the RAM is perfectly captured by the release prongs that hold the RAM in place.

The Hard Drives

Both hard drive bays are also easy-access, just be mindful of the direction the tray and hard drive are oriented; this is a common way to get confused and accidentally try to force something into the wrong position. If you do everything right, your screws should all fit perfectly without needing to be jammed; if you’re having trouble then check to see if your tray is oriented in the right direction!

The Operating System

Of course this part is VERY important, so don’t forget! Before you begin this procedure, especially for hard drive swapping obviously, you want to have a full backup of your entire computer in case things go south.

Whether you restore that full backup or just re-install your operating system from scratch is up to you.  Personally, we recommend doing a fresh install of your operating system at least once a year.  We do also use hard drive cloning programs however, which would allow you to clone your old hard drive to your new hard drive.  If you do this, just make sure that when you turn on your computer, you can upgrade the hardware drivers or firmware etc; sometimes SSD hard drives may not work optimally if they aren’t properly recognized by the operating system.

Good luck, and thanks for tuning in!
