In this $250 million blockbuster movie, Brad Pitt plays a United Nations employee trying to stop a zombie takeover. A combination of thousands of extras and CGI technology made this zombie apocalyptic movie quite the action thriller. Even the actors had some terrified moments on set.

This behind-the-scenes look gives us insight into the production from the elaborate (time-consuming) makeup for all of the extras to the amazing CGI and graphics. We also get to hear the director talk about his vision for the movie and the challenges he faced while making it. Check it out!

Photoshop is used on most commercial images these days. It’s expected, it’s the new norm.

But the Photoshopping isn’t only used to thin out arms or clean up blemishes as you might expect. Besides thinning, it’s also used to add curves and smooth out muscles. Some celebrities have worked really hard at the gym only to have their cover photo hit the newsstands making them look as untoned as ever (see below).

Some would argue that these types of images create unrealistic expectations and standards for beauty in our society. Which is all the more reason to see some of the before pictures of these images, as we show you below.

So we now have both sides of the story, people being photoshopped to look smaller and others to look bigger. And then of course some to look younger. Will it ever end?

Check out some examples of these three different types of celebrity photoshopping:

Mumbai-based photographer Martin Prihoda has paid a touching tribute to photography by writing and directing a touching and beautiful short film. This lovely film pays tribute both photography and Mumbai, the two things that have had a huge impact on Prihoda’s life.

Prihoda was originally based in Vancouver, before breaking through his barriers, stepping out of his comfort zone and moving to Mumbai 5 years ago.

In a recent interview with David Hobby of Strobist, Prihoda explains why he made the big decision to pick up and leave, and how this has affected him:

“I’m much more comfortable dealing with larger crews and delegating. I’m also much more at ease walking into an agency and showing my work or presenting my thoughts at a pre-production meeting or even just sitting and discussing ideas with the editor or art director of a magazine.”

“I feel as though Mumbai threw me into the big leagues with real players and real budgets. I suppose the most important thing for me is that I answered my ‘what if’ questions: what if I moved out of my comfort zone and went somewhere crazy and tested my skills, would I succeed?”

Prihoda’s film breaks through the busyness of everyday life and focuses on those fleeting and lovely moments in life that photography is able to capture. He describes the film as a “love letter to Bombay and to the good old ‘film’ days.”

A new player in the crowdsourcing trend launched earlier this month. Advertising creatives Cassandra Nguyen and Grazina Snipas are offering a new way to find custom photography with their site PicoImages.com. Pico Images will connect users looking for specific photographs with just about anyone that can use a camera.

“We believe the democratization of photography and technology has increased the quality of photos people take every day,” said Snipas. “You no longer have to be a professional photographer to take a great photo.”

The process is simple—users describe the photo they’re looking for, how they plan to use it, and how much they’re willing to pay. Anyone with an image matching that description can submit their photo. Upon purchase, Pico Images generates a custom image license between the two parties.

Nguyen and Snipas formed Pico Images, their first company, after becoming frustrated at the lack of quality images on stock photography sites. “We had the budget for photography but couldn’t find anything that looked good on the popular stock sites,” said Nguyen. “At the same time, we were seeing all of these great photos pop up on our social networks but didn’t have an easy way to contact the photographers or to license them. Pico Images plans to bridge that gap.”

As a designer myself, I totally get where these two are coming from. I have literally spent hours or sometimes an entire work day searching for the right stock image for a clients’ design project. In fact, one of the primary reasons I took my photography hobby to the next level was so I could provide custom photography for my clients.

Obviously, a professional or at least an educated photography enthusiast, is going to take a better picture than the average Joe with a cell phone, but I think the concept behind Pico Images is a good one. Since the buyer sets the budget, photographers from amateur to seasoned professional can benefit. On the other hand, will crowdsourcing sights like this one lower the stock photography standard and pricing expectation even further than the ever popular micro stock trend? What are your thoughts?

Photographer and artist Daniel Gordon recently released a new series of work inspired by the colorful and revolutionary artworks of French artist Henri Matisse. The title of Gordon’s latest series, ‘The Green Line’, is a direct reference to Matisse’s well-known 1905 portrait of his wife, titled ‘The Green Stripe’.

Matisse is visually referenced in several of Gordon’s works including large scale still lifes and portraits, along with a selection of smaller works operating as isolated studies. In order to make these works, Gordon takes photographic images from the internet, prints them, then cuts and tears them to build 3D tableaus which he then photographs with a an 8 x 10 inch view camera.

Gordon’s works are a melding together of fragmented elements from reality which come together to make a coherent whole, despite the fact that they are made up of a variety of perspectives, profiles and people.

Gordon’s process can be seen as a kind of physical form of Photoshop, as he slices, cuts, glues, stages, arranges and recycles before taking the photograph–a reversal on the digital process where a photograph would first be taken then edited.

Gordon told Slate:

“I’m interested in taking ideas that were radical in Matisse’s day (collapsing space through the blending of foreground and background, multiple angles viewed at the same time, and Fauvist color and expression, among others) and moving them into a contemporary photographic space. I suppose it’s a kind of physical version of Photoshop that’s playing with a big history and multiple mediums.”

An exhibition of Gordon’s recent series can be seen at M+B gallery Los Angeles until 29 June, 2013. Click here for more info.
