Hey There Readers! Matthew Saville Here, with a quick announcement for anyone who is attending (or thinking of attending) WPPI this year. On Thursday WPPI was definitely winding down, the halls were emptying, the trade show was packing up and most of the buzz of the week had dissipated to a low murmer. Most WPPI attendees had already made for the exits and skipped the late show from Jerry and Sondra, but it was one of the more insightful and honest of the entire week. Mark Halper spoke for an hour as a guest speaker and really got down to brass tacks. I’ll cover Mark’s presentation in a separate piece as it was powerful enough to stand on it’s own.

Here’s the setting: extra large conference room, extra large video cameras, two extra large screens on an extra large stage. The room was packed and excited to learn from Southern California-based wedding photographer, and founder of [b]school, [b]ecker. With all this fanfare and regalia, the thing that I liked most about Becker, was that when he came out and began his talk, I felt so comfortable and at ease, like he was a buddy of mine and he’s chatting with me over a pint at a pub. He was downright down-to-earth and likeable.

There he was. On stage with his arms full of giveaways, he stood with a smirk as he prepared to throw over 50 mouse-pads into the audience. As people began standing up, jumping to grab one, he pelted these giveaways and even saved a special last one to rub against his chest as an extra bonus to the lucky winner. The mouse-pad flew all the way to the back. By then, he definitely had everyone’s attention.

At 8:58 in the morning, a bunch of sleepy and weary-eyed photographers piled into room 310 at the MGM conference facility. There was Mary, Starbucks in hand, having a quiet moment with Justin. She reaches for his hand, takes a deep breath. Justin gives her a small smile, and in the dim lighting, Mary’s face glows. The WPPI program said that this talk was to cover how to build a business that thrives, not just survives, in any economic climate. The brochure was not wrong, but I’m here to tell you that it was much more than that it definitely sold the class short.

Lisa Lefkowitz got started by doing low end weddings at a high volume. She didn’t like how things were going so she decided on what she wanted to be doing and starting taking steps to get there. She loves taking photos of details and this makes her work very attractive to magazines and online publications. This also allows her to do a lot of storytelling through details. Her photos are brights and airy with a lot of off-camera gaze.

After days of little sleep, it took a loud alarm, a Starbucks frap, and the 15-minute sprint (in heels, mind you) to the MGM Grand Garden Arena.  Thanks to WPPI’s new Pre-Board system, the place was already fairly packed 10 minutes before the event started. But once the staff knew I was covering the event for SLR Lounge, I was given a front seat to one of the most emotional and moving classes in all of WPPI.
