This is great info! I love the realism and down to earth view of our trade. I would like to point out that you can be a great photographer but have poor sales skills and you will not get much business. You can however be an average photographer and excel in sales and marketing and make a great living in this business.

Be a master at customer service and sales. I used to worked for many years starting at 1 hour film mini labs and pro colour and b/w darkroom custom labs up to pro digital labs and assisting pro camera sales staff at large camera stores. Plus I did customer service and sales up in the front with pros and consumers and I got my start in portrait photography in college at Expressly Portraits in the Malls!

I have dealt with ALL walks of life and their pet iguanas(I am not kidding) and during the holidays too. Learning how to smile, breathe, and know when to keep quiet and step back and when to step in to help out.

Hi,

I have to say I loved this post! I launched my photography business, here in London, last May and what you've said is so interesting and true of my own experience! I only started thinking about charging and launching the business after spending some time with professional photographer friends of mine.

However, what I would completely agree with is the amount of time you're not taking photos. When I think about 'the business' (which I'm building up part-time), I think about the letters I need to write, the customers I need to get back in touch with, the newsletter that needs updating, the blog that needs promoting etc etc. Luckily, I love it and I love running a business which is a good job because the majority of my time in the last 18 months has been promoting the business, doing freebies etc.

This is really reassuring to know that I'm on the right track. I was very honoured to be given the opportunity to be principle photographer at a wedding at the beginning of May and it was a massive success but this is almost four years in the making so would definitely agree that it takes time to get to weddings and even longer to get to *excellent* wedding standard.

As a final point, I'm doing all this on top of a high pressure 9-5 full time job. You have to be very committed and patient but the rewards - :D :D :D :D

Even the little things feel monumental. Have fun but heed the warnings in this post!
