Announcement! My one is bigger than yours… (Lens Envy) – Nikon 800mm f/5.6 Announced

800mm f5.6
Currently Nikon’s longest AF-Lens is the 600mm f/4G VR, and that is retailing for around £7,072.00p ($9,799.00 in the US).

However, Nikon has just announced the new 800mm f/5.6. This lens will be displayed at Photokina 2012, and I’m sure it would get a lot of attention. I personally would drool all over this lens as I really would love to see what it’s like shooting with a Super Telephoto like this.

For most people, this focal length is excessive, but for Sports Photographers, it’s an essential. For me personally, I would just love to have some fun with this lens and check out its compression at 800mm!

No official statement has been made about its price, however I think it’s safe to say, it’s easily beyond my budget!

My estimate would be around the £8-9k mark, seeing as Nikon have a history of roughly being double the price of the equivalent Sigma’s, and Sigma currently have their 800mm f/5.6 for £4319.99.

Previously I’ve said it’s better to buy over than rent, but I think in this case, I think if I ever were to get my hands on this bad boy, it would definitely be a rented one for me.

Are they going to make a macro reverse ring for that?

You do know that Canon already has an 800mm 5.6L and has had it for months… IMHO, 800mm is way to tight for any sport except baseball. And even then, I’d rather have a 400mm 2.8 and use a 2x teleconverter.
